Boun Visakha Busa

Visakha Busa, also known as Vesak or Buddha Day, is the most sacred Buddhist holiday, commemorating three pivotal events in the life of Siddhartha Gautama—the Buddha: his birth, enlightenment, and passing into nirvana. This significant day falls on the full moon of the sixth lunar month, typically in May.

How Lao Buddhist Temples Celebrate

Here at Wat Lao Sidaounnaram, Visakha Busa is observed with deep reverence and community participation. The day begins with devotees offering alms—such as food, flowers, incense, and candles—to monks, symbolizing generosity and respect. Monks lead the community in chanting and deliver dharma talks that reflect on the Buddha’s teachings. In the evening, a candlelight procession known as Vien Tien takes place, where participants walk three times around the temple’s main hall, holding candles, incense, and lotus flowers, honoring the Buddha’s life and teachings.
