Boun Phavet

June 20 @ 8:00 am June 22 @ 5:00 pm

Boun Phavet is a revered Theravāda Buddhist festival in Laos that celebrates the life of Phra Vessantara (known in Pali as Vessantara), the Buddha’s penultimate incarnation before attaining enlightenment. This festival highlights the values of generosity, compassion, and selflessness, which are embodied in the story of Phra Vessantara, who gave away all his possessions—including his children—to fulfill the virtue of perfect generosity (dāna pāramī).

Significance

Boun Phavet is deeply rooted in Lao spiritual and cultural identity. It offers a unique opportunity for the community to reflect on the importance of self-sacrifice, moral virtue, and the path to Buddhahood. It is also a time when men may be ordained as monks, even temporarily, as a way of gaining merit for themselves and their families.

Festival Activities

Ordination Ceremonies: This is a popular time for young Lao men to enter the monkhood, bringing honor to their families and spiritual merit to their lives.

Recitation of the Phra Vessantara Jataka: The heart of the festival is the continuous chanting or storytelling of the Vessantara Jataka, often taking place over the course of a day and night.

Almsgiving and Merit-Making: Devotees participate in almsgiving, food offerings, and community feasts.

Processions: Villagers or temple members often carry symbolic representations of the story in a colorful parade, accompanied by traditional music.
